The Challenge
This project involved a new NHS surgery with a large rooflight opening and an angled ceiling design.
The ceiling ran at a 6.4° angle, requiring the blind to align precisely so the fabric and ceiling formed a continuous visual line when extended.
Blinds needed to operate in perfect synchronisation, ensuring consistent blackout performance across multiple openings.
The scale added further complexity. At over 16 metres, the blind exceeded typical system limits, requiring a solution capable of maintaining tension, stability and smooth operation across its full span.
The system also needed to deliver effective solar control within a clinical environment without compromising the architectural design.
System Design
A bespoke motorised rooflight blind was developed to span the full opening.
The headbox was angled to match the ceiling pitch, ensuring the blind fabric aligned cleanly with the architectural form.
Integration
The system was designed for reliable and simple operation.
- Motorised control for smooth, consistent movement
- Integrated within the ceiling structure

Bespoke Engineering
The 16m span required a non-standard design approach.
The system was engineered to maintain fabric tension and stability across the full width while ensuring consistent performance over time.
Fabric & Performance
A performance-led approach was applied to the fabric selection.
- Solar control across large glazed area
- Reduced glare within clinical spaces
Delivery & Installation

The Outcome
The completed blind delivers effective solar control across a large rooflight while maintaining alignment with the angled ceiling.
When extended, the fabric follows the ceiling line, preserving the architectural intent of the space.
Despite its size, the system operates smoothly and reliably, supporting long-term use within a healthcare environment.
The result is a high-performance solution that balances scale, function and design.
